The Industry and Population of Great Britain
Britain is a
highly developed industrial country. In 1840 the technical
progress started in the factories of Manchester and Liverpool.
Traditionally,
the country has a highly developed textile industry. For many
years raw cotton from India and other colonies was imported to
Britain.
Britain has a developed automobile industry. Its cars, such as
«Rolls Royce» and «Jaguar» are well known in the world. The
richest men usually buy them. It is a sign of prestige to have
such a car.
Besides, Britain has a developed food industry. A lot of sheep
and other cattle can be seen in the fields.
As the country has a vast sea coast, it traditionally has a
developed shipbuilding industry. It was often called «the
Mistress of the seas». The English ships sailed through the
world for many years. Now a lot of ships are being built in the
country every year.
Great Britain
doesn't have a lot of mineral resources. However, oil was
discovered in the North Sea and it is extracted on special sea
stations. Coal is mined in Wales mainly.
Britain also has a developed agriculture. The English are well
known in the world as the nation of garden-lovers and they like
to grow different agricultural plants. Our gardeners also use
the British seeds, while working in their gardens. A lot of
gardening exhibitions are held in Britain. Even the Queen
attends them with pleasure.
Cattle-breeding
of this country is very well-known in the world. The sheep and
cows from Britain are famous for the good taste of meat.
The capital of
the country is London. It is the biggest political, industrial,
economic, cultural and financial centre.
The other important cities of the country are — Liverpool,
Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff and others.
Liverpool and
Manchester are famous for their industry. Glasgow is well-known
in the world because of its University.
Besides, Great
Britain has many resorts, such as Bath. Many tourists come to
see Britain every year. They visit the sights of London,
Stonehenge, castles of Scotland. The history of the country is
very interesting for them.

information about British customs and history while traveling
through Britain.
