The Education System in Great Britain
The system of
education in Great Britain is one of the oldest in the world.
Some English schools and universities were founded 7—8 centuries
ago.
In Great Britain there are both state and independent
institutions. Schools are generally divided into primary and
secondary schools. The primary stage also includes pre-school
institutions, meaning those for children who have not yet
reached compulsory school age. Children from 5 to 7 attend
infant schools, from 7 to 11 — junior schools.
The secondary education starts for the English children at the
age of eleven. They pass the «eleven plus examination» and enter
different kinds of secondary schools according to the results.
The education in the secondary schools lasts four or five years.
It depends upon their abilities. Then the pupils have the
examinations and get the certificates of secondary education.
After that they may continue their education at colleges or
universities.
